Introduction
- The Domain Name Service (DNS) service converts human-readable domain names (for example: example.com) to computer-readable IP addresses (for example: 192.0.32.10). DNS relies on the "DNS zones" that exist on the server, to convert the domain name to IP addresses.
- WHM offers the ability to modify an area DNS who are in the administration of the service DNS installed on the server. This functionality is provided by DNS Functions, more precisely Edit a DNS Zone.
Requirement
- WHM credentials. This data can be found in the management email of the reseller account or VPS with cPanel/WHM.
Steps
- After logging in to WHM on the left side of the page we will go to the section DNS Functions and we will click on Edit a DNS Zone. Alternatively, we can search for this menu using the search field in the upper left.
- On the next page, we will select the domain that we want to modify, after which we will click on the Edit.
- All the DNS records of the selected domain will be uploaded to a tabular interface that will contain the columns:
Domeniul
TTL - time to live.
The DNS record type.
Here we will have the possibility to edit existing records or add new ones in the empty fields at the base of the table.
The most common DNS records are: - A - Associate a domain name to an IPv4 address.
AAAA - Associates a domain name to an IPv6 address.
MX - Identifies the email server to which emails are directed.
CNAME - Joins a domain to an alias.
At the end of the table we will also be able to modify the routing of emails. We can choose between:
Local Mail Exchanger (the email server used is local) - the email server used will be the local one
Backup Mail Exchanger - the email server used will be the external one, but if the external server is unavailable, the local one will be used.
- the email server used will be an external one, according to the MX records.- Once we have made the desired changes, we will click on the Save button at the base of the page. As an example, we added a type A record that associates the demo.hostico.com subdomain with the IP 89.44.200.147 and set the email routing to the local version.
- If everything went smoothly we will be greeted by a successful message Your settings have been updated.
